Terroir

Territorial identity
Area: terraced vineyards between the Karst plateau and the Gulf of Trieste
Local name: Breg (Slovene: slope, hillside, shore)
Definition: autonomous coastal transition terroir
Klin Winery operates in the Breg, the terraced belt below the Karst escarpment descending toward the Adriatic sea. It is a territory locally recognized as distinct, with its own agricultural and viticultural identity.
It is not:
— Karst (it lacks the limestone soils with red earth and the extreme climatic austerity),
— Istria (neither in soil, climate, nor Mediterranean ripeness),
— Collio/Brda (no continuous hilly system and a different thermal dynamic).
The Breg is born from the convergence of coastal flysch, landscape verticality and direct maritime influence, creating an unrepeatable terroir where soil and microclimate produce wines of balance, precision and strong identity.
Soil
Composition: flysch (layered marls and sandstones)
Structure: more clay-rich than the Karst, with good water-holding capacity
Skeletal content: friable marly stones
Geological affinity: closer to the ponka of Collio/Brda than to Karst limestone
Effects on the wine
— greater depth and structure compared to pure limestone soils
— integrated, non-aggressive acidity
— natural volume without opulence
— salinity present but harmonized
Morphology
and vineyards
Terraced vineyards, often on steep slopes.
Manual viticulture and small vineyard parcels.
Strong light exposure, with marked day–night temperature differences.
The verticality of the landscape directly influences the freshness and aromatic definition of the wines.
Microclimate
Direct influence of the Adriatic sea (Gulf of Trieste|Trst|Triest).
Constant presence of marine breezes.
Thermal inversion between the Karst plateau and sea level.
Milder climate compared to the inner Karst.
Slow, even ripening.
Effects on the wine
— preservation of aromatic freshness
— balanced phenolic maturity
— wines more harmonious than the more austere Karst profiles
— great drinkability and precision
Wine of wind, stone and sea.
